Couples Intensives

Strengthen Your Relationship

RESEARCH-BACKED METHOD

RESTORATIVE EXPERIENCE

TWO OR THREE DAY IMMERSIVE SESSIONS

WHY INTENSIVES?

MOVE QUICKLY.

Intensives are structured to kickstart growth. The longer format allows us to dig down to the root of your challenges and develop solutions faster. A 2 day Intensive can make change equivalent to 6 months of therapy.

MAXIMIZE CONVENIENCE.

It can be hard to find time for weekly therapy. Intensives allow you to quickly make progress with minimal interruption to your other roles and responsibilities.

REKINDLE YOUR SPARK.

Sharing this immersive experience is often a bridge to understanding each other and connecting again. Often, intensives can help you remember why you fell in love in the first place.

INTENSIVE AGENDA

DAY 1: GET TO KNOW YOU

HOUR 1 – We all meet together.

HOUR 2 – I will meet partner A one-to-one.

HOUR 3 – I will meet with partner B one-to-one.

Hour long lunch break

HOUR 4 – We will review your Gottman Connect Assessment results and tie in your interviews to identify the starting treatment goals.

HOUR 5-6 – We will begin working on the primary goals using relevant Gottman Couples Therapy interventions. We’ll also start on betrayal work, if applicable.

DAY 2: THERAPY

This day looks different for everyone. Many couples will learn replacement communication and conflict management skills. We’ll practice strategies to restore friendship and work through ways to process regrettable incidents. If betrayal is a concern, we will skip straight to the Gottmans’ Atone, Attune, Attach model for betrayal recovery.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR US?

IT MAY BE IF…

YOU FEEL STUCK.

What you’ve been doing is not working, and you are tired of banging your head against the wall.

YOU'RE WILLING TO DO THE WORK.

Both of you desire to feel connected again or to end the constant conflict, and you want to do what it takes to get there.

YOU WANT TO MOVE QUICKLY.

If you’re experiencing issues that need to be dealt with soon or just want to share an immersive experience with your partner.

IT MAY NOT BE IF…

One of you has an active alcohol and/or drug addiction that is not being addressed by a recovery program.

There is serious violence in your relationship, threats by one or both partners that serious violence might occur, or fear of serious violence.

There is an undisclosed or current affair that either partner is unwilling to give up.

If either partner currently has an untreated major mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar, or dissociative identity disorder).

Either partner is currently experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts or has a history of serious suicide attempts or harm to others.

FAQ

WHAT IF MY partner doesn’t want to do AN INTENSIVE?

Let’s chat. This is a format for motivated couples, but I’m happy to answer any questions or concerns that your partner may have. Solo Relationship Intensives are an alternative.

I feel like there’s no way forward in our relationship. Is this even worth it?

Absolutely. As long as you’re motivated and willing to try something new, there’s hope for change. I’ve worked with many couples who felt this way at the beginning and have been able to overcome relational obstacles together.

Can I use my insurance?

Insurance can only be used for weekly appointments if you meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis.

What should we expect in the first hour?

I’m going to be curious about your relationship.

  • What brought you to therapy?
  • What fights you are having?
  • What are the twists and turns you’ve encountered as a couple?
What should I expect during my solo interview?

More curiosity from me:

  • Tell me all about your family.
  • History of prior relationships.
  • History of prior therapy.
  • What are your hopes and expectations of the relationship and therapy?
  • How do you weigh staying in the relationship vs. getting out of the relationship?
  • Any obstacles to commitment or trust.
  • Any other history you feel is connected to your relationship.

Can you tell me more about betrayal work?

We’ll use the Gottman’s Atone, Attune, Attach Model. This blog is helpful in describing the core components.

ongoing support

Many couples choose to continue regular therapy after intensives to keep digging into the issues they uncover, maintain progress, and prevent relapse. The intensive can lay the foundation for successful weekly to monthly therapy.
